The Ethical Implications Of Euthanasia - 1836 Words

Professor Bill Talbott from University of Washington defines killing and letting die as follows: killing is the direct action of a person involved in the process of ending another life, while letting die is consciously not taking actions to preserve someone’s life [1]. For example, if a terminally ill cancer patient without hope for a cure or improvement decides to end their life, then is the way they choose to end their life significant? Many circumstances commonly encountered that raises the question of the ethical implications and differences between killing and letting die are physician assisted suicide for terminally ill patients, euthanasia for terminally ill patients, do not resuscitate (DNR) command by next of kin, withholding all care and nourishment from a vegetative or comatose patient, or unwanted premature infants [2]. The concepts of killing a patient or letting a patient die are only considered under extreme medical conditions, mostly at the request of the patie nt. At which point, the distinction between killing and letting die becomes significant to appease the moral stigma that may follow from aiding in the act of ending life. Kantian moral theory states that every rationale person is equal, entitled to autonomy and every life is equal. It also states that each life is valuable and it is our moral duty to protect life [2]. Both direct action (killing) and indirect action (letting die) are morally wrong because they are both conscious acts of aiding in theShow MoreRelatedVoluntary/Assisted Euthanasia Essay1200 Words   |  5 PagesVoluntary/Assisted Euthanasia Grand Canyon University Ethical Decision Making in Health Care Voluntary/Assisted Euthanasia (Thesis, Description of the topic and related ethical implications, Obligations to your profession and work as a nurse) Debra Burden The purpose of this paper is to define the issue and legalities of assisted death and the key ethical arguments, including the social values and norms, encompassing this topic. People have had mental illnesses since the beginning of time. In this generation, the right look and the right actions are what everyone is looking for. Perfection is the aim, to  ¨fit in. ¨ Though, when we see someone with a mental or physical illness, we automatically jump to the conclusion that those people are different and we can’t be seen with them for the sake of a simple reputation. People know that others who suffer from these illnesses are different, yet they don’t question what is happening to that person because of their mental illness or how much they’re outcast. This brief article is to show what exactly these people are going through. Mental illnesses such as dissociative identity disorder, social anxiety, bipolarism, post traumatic stress disorder, or obsessive compulsive disorder make some people stand out. They make the lives of people who have them very difficult and stressful. They do understand though when people are being mean; they migh t not understand why, but they know you’re not being kind. Dissociative identity disorder is an illness that takes place when two or more distinctly different personalities appear and alternatively take over an individual’s body. People with this disorder have severe memory loss and normally don’t remember even changing personalities. The Basic Principle Of Inquiry - 1195 Words

Human nature is to question. Whether they are minor or groundbreaking questions is irrelevant, but the basic principle of inquiry is what constructs the pillars of philosophical thought. As in all things, the beginnings of philosophy were somewhat elementary, but complexity has built as history advances. Philosophy is loosely organized into 2 fields, Western and Eastern. Western philosophy is associated with Ancient Greek, Roman, Western Europe, and later on, the Americas’ process of thought. Being that we are predominantly influenced by this field of philosophy (due to our location) it is essential that we must understand the beginnings and the evolution of this ideology. Western philosophy has developed with each coming era and is widely accepted to be organized chronologically into 3 ages, Ancient, Medieval, and Modern, with each contributing new doctrines, philosophical branches, and theories to Western thinking. Ancient The Ancient Era of philosophy spanned from the 7th century B.C to the 5th century and consisted of 4 briefer eras; Pre-Socratic, Socratic, Hellenistic, and finished of with Roman. Many of the philosophers of this era came from Greece or Rome, but many Egyptian scholars also had significant ideas that were present during these times. Common Biases and Errors in Decision-Making Process Free Essays

COMMON BIASES AND ERRORS IN DECISION-MAKING PROCESS In addition to engaging in bounded rationality, an accumulating body of research tells us that decision makers allow systematic biases and errors to creep into their judgments. These come out of attempts to shortcut the decision process. To minimize effort and avoid difficult trade-offs, people tend to rely too heavily on experience, impulses, gut feelings, and convenient aâ‚ ¬? rules of thumb. We will write a custom essay sample on Common Biases and Errors in Decision-Making Process or any similar topic only for you Order Now aâ‚ ¬? In many instances, these shortcuts are helpful. However, they can lead to severe distortions from rationality. The following highlights the most common distortions. Overconfidence Bias:  Itaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been said that aâ‚ ¬? no problem in judgment and decision making is more prevalent and more potentially catastrophic than overconfidence. aâ‚ ¬? When weaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re given factual questions and asked to judge the probability that our answers are correct, we tend to be far too optimistic. For instance, studies have found that, when people say theyaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re 65 to 70% confident that theyaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re right, they were actually correct only about 50% of the time. And when they say theyaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re 100% sure, they tended to be 70 to 85% correct. From an organizational standpoint, one of the more interesting findings related to overconfidence is that those individuals whose intellectual and interpersonal abilities are weakest are most likely to overestimate their performance and ability. So as mangers and employees become more knowledgeable about an issue, the less likely they are to display overconfidence. Overconfidence is most likely to surface when organizational members are considering issues or problems that are outside their area of expertise. Anchoring Bias:  The anchoring bias is a tendency to fixate on initial information as a starting point. Once set, we then fail to adequately adjust for subsequent information. The anchoring bias occurs because our mind appears to give a disproportionate amount of emphasis to the first information it receives. So initial impressions, ideas, process, and estimates carry undue weight relative to information received later. Anchors are widely used by professional people such as advertising writers, managers, politicians, real estate agents, and lawyersaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â‚¬ where persuasion skills are important For instance, in a mock jury trial, one set of jurors was asked by the plaintiffaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s attorney to make an award in the range of Rs. million to Rs. 25 million. Another set of jurors was asked for an award in the range of Rs. 25 million to 75 million. Consistent with the anchoring bias, the median awards were Rs. 5 million versus Rs. 25 million in the two conditions. Consider the role of anchoring in negotiations and interviews. Any time a negotiation takes place, so does anchoring . As soon as someone states a number, your ability to objectively ignore that number has been compromised. For instance, when a prospective employer asks how much you were making in your prior job, your answer typically anchors the employeraâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s offer. Most of us understand this and upwardly aâ‚ ¬? adjustaâ‚ ¬? our previous salary in the hope that it will encourage our employer to offer us more. Anchoring can distort employment interviews. The initial information you might get interviewing a job candidate is likely to anchor your assessment of the applicant and unduly influence how you interpret information that you obtain later. Confirmation Bias:  The rational decision-making process assumes that we objectively gather information. But we donaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t. We selectively gather information. The information bias represents a specific case of selective perception. We seek out information that reaffirms our past choices, and we discount information that contradicts past judgments. We also tend to accept information at face value that confirms our preconceived views, while being critical and skeptical of information that challenges these views. The information we gather is typically biased toward supporting views we already hold. This confirmation bias influences where we go to collect evidence because we tend to seek out places that are more likely to tell us what we want to hear. It also leads us to give too much weight to supporting information and too little to contradictory information. Availability Bias:  Many more people suffer from fear of flying than fear of driving in a car. The reason is that many people think flying is more dangerous. If flying on a commercial airline was as dangerous as driving, the equivalent of two 747s filled to capacity would have to crash every week, killing all aboard, to match the risk of being killed in a car accident. But the media give a lot more attention to air accidents, so we tend to overstate the risk of flying and understate the risk of driving. This illustrates an example of the availability bias, which is the tendency for people to base their judgments on information that is readily available to them. Events that evoke emotions, that are particularly vivid, or that have occurred more recently tend to be more available in our memory. As a result, we tend to be prone to overestimating unlikely events like an airplane crash. The availability bias can also explain why managers, when doing annual performance appraisals, tend to give more weight to recent behaviors of an employee than those behaviors of six or nine months ago. Escalation of Commitment Error:  Another distortion that creeps into decisions in practice is a tendency to escalate commitment when a decision stream represents a series of decisions. Escalation of commitment refers to staying with a decision even when there is clear evidence that itaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s wrong. An example of this is of my friend, who has been dating a woman for about four years. He admitted that things werenaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t going too well in their relationship; he informed me that he was going to marry the woman. A bit surprised by his decision, I asked him why. He responded: aâ‚ ¬? I have a lot invested in the relationship! aâ‚ ¬? It has been well documented that individuals escalate commitment to a failing course of action when they view themselves as a responsible for the failure. That is they aâ‚ ¬? throw good money after badaâ‚ ¬? o demonstrate that their initial decision wasnaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wrong and to avoid having to admit they made a mistake. Escalation of commitment is also congruent with evidence that people try to appear consistent in what they say and do. Increasing commitment to previous actions conveys consistency. Escalation of commitment has obvious implications for managerial decisions. Many an organization has suffered large losses because a manager was determined to prove his or her original decision was right by continuing to commit resources to what was a lost cause from the beginning. In addition, consistency is a characteristic often associated with effective leaders. So managers, in an effort to appear effective, may be motivated to be consistent when switching to another course of action. In reality, effective managers are those who are able to differentiate between situations in which persistence will pay off and situations in which it will not. http://www. citeman. com/384-common-biases-and-errors-in-decision-making-process. html How to cite Common Biases and Errors in Decision-Making Process, Essay examples

Based on Wikipedia Bankruptcy is a lawfully declared inability or damage of ability of an person or organisation to pay its creditors. Creditors may register a bankruptcy request against a concern or corporate debitor ( â€Å"involuntary bankruptcy† ) in an attempt to reimburse a part of what they are owed or originate a restructuring. An nonvoluntary bankruptcy request may non be filed against an single consumer debitor who is non engaged in concern. Many concerns now a twenty-four hours experience bankruptcy. Bankruptcy was originally planned as a redress for creditors non for the debitors. During the clip of King Henry VIII. a jurisprudence was made to let creditor to prehend all the staying assets of a bargainer who could non pay their debt. And the debitor will non lose his freedom he will be charge and topic for imprisonment. In early nineteenth century in England. debitors were frequently released from prison with their debts discharged. But what does it truly intend. Well I have gathered some elements that might be helpful for us to understand the nature of the subject given. The first component to be discussed is the investor’s. this could be one of the factors that can do bankruptcy. and investors can do or interrupt any company they are in. if the investor refused to put money in his bing concern who is the brink of bankruptcy certainly in no clip the said concern will slowly face bankruptcy. Corporate bankruptcies non merely do fiscal losingss for concern spouses. such as clients. loaners and providers. but besides have inauspicious effects on stockholders and securities markets’ investors. Bankruptcy allows a corporation to halt reimbursing loaners and utilize the company’s staying assets. such as hard currency. machines and equipment’s. to reorganise. Reorganization means the house gets a â€Å"fresh start† without the heavy load of debt. Bankruptcy does non ensue in the arrest of all debts because debitors remain in control of corporate operations as â€Å"debtors in ownership. † Stock equity consists of ownership rights that a house sells to investors on a securities exchange or in private minutess. Equity merchandises may include common ( regular ) portions. preferable portions. equity hereafters and equity-linked fiscal derived functions. An investor who buys portions of equity. or stockholder. receives periodic dividend payments and makes net incomes when the company’s portion monetary values lift on the fiscal market. He besides can vote on corporate determinations. appoint senior executives and take part in a company’s one-year shareholders’ meeting. A company that files for bankruptcy by and large has worthless portions of equity. Investors on securities exchanges normally sell such portions. and this procedure causes portions to diminish significantly. However. a firm’s portions of equity may go on to be traded during a reorganisation procedure. provided that the company meets minimal listing demands that a securities exchange. such as the New York Stock Exchange ( NYSE ) or the Johannesburg Stock Exchange ( JSE ) . by and large requires. Alternatively. these portions may be traded in nonprescription ( OTC ) . or electronic. markets. Restructuring procedure has important effects on shareholders’ equity. Besides the fiscal losingss that investors incur. a corporate insolvency instance has an inauspicious â€Å"domino effect† ( concatenation reaction ) on other concern spouses. or merchandise counter-parties. A company that is unable to reimburse loans or run into other pecuniary committednesss when they are due causes other concern spouses to endure losingss. which may take to farther bank ruptcies. Consequences for the Philippines can be found through the nexus below. The Asia-Pacific Restructuring and Insolvency Guide 2006. which is linked below. supply an account of the restructuring and insolvency model of the Philippines. Among other subjects. the study covers the legal model and effectivity of tribunal procedures and legal redresss. effects on the direction of the company. functions of cardinal participants involved in the restructuring and insolvency procedure. and fiscal issues such as the order in which creditors are paid in a corporate bankruptcy or settlement. Foreign Studies Privacy is considered by many American to be a cardinal right. Overtime. the legal model protecting single privateness has evolved to react to alterations in the manner sensitive personal information is obtained. retained. and used. Personal fiscal records. which can include list of purchases. bank history Numberss. and other alone identifiers. incorporate some of the most sensitive information about persons. if used unscrupulously. this information can do significant injury. In a universe of paper records and unaffiliated fiscal establishment. which characterized the U. S. fiscal system for most of its history. fiscal privateness concerns were comparatively minor. Information on persons was hard to obtain. was non widely shared among establishments. and was non by and large used as an plus for selling or other intents. Today. nevertheless. three major developments are raising new concerns about protections of personal fiscal information. First fiscal information now flows much more quickly. and in much greater volumes. than of all time earlier. An ordinary desktop computing machine is now significantly more powerful than the mainframe of 30 old ages ago. and can hive away. manipulate. and analyze far more information at immensely lower cost. Progresss in telecommunication allow this information to be sent anyplace in the universe outright. at likewise low cost. These technological developments have created chances for sharing of information among establishment that were barely envisioned even a few old ages ago. In add-on. the coming of big databases available through the cyberspace creates new chances for entree by the general populace to information about persons. frequently without the subject’s cognition or consent. The free flow of information that is now possible offers much advantage in economic efficiency and single wellbeing. At the same clip. it poses possible new menaces to a debtor’s private ness. A 2nd cardinal alteration is the turning integrating and consolidation among fiscal services suppliers. Interstate banking and ramification have allowed Bankss to turn larger than of all time before. and the remotion of regulative restraints has allowed fiscal services organisations to come in lines of concern that were antecedently off bounds. Banks. for illustration. may now consort with houses runing from travel bureaus to wellness insurance suppliers. This integrating will let houses and consumers to profit from â€Å"economies of graduated table. † in which the proviso of related fiscal services together can break run into consumers’ demands at a lower cost. But theseeconomies stem. in portion. from an ability to portion consumer informations across attached entities and that sharing besides raises legitimate privateness concerns. A 3rd alteration is the increasing usage of electronic agencies of buying and payment. Americans increasing usage of recognition cards. debit cards and more late electronic measure payment in stead of hard currency now allows fiscal services companies to roll up tremendous sums of elaborate information about an individual’s dealing. Until late. neither establishment nor persons were able to make elaborate lifestyle portrayals utilizing such information. The creative activity of electronic instance files and the electronic aggregation and airing of bankruptcy information are their earliest phases. Date on the existent injury ensuing from these developments are comparatively scarce. nevertheless. these developments could make a hazard for possible abuse or obnoxious re-use. As the remark submitted on behalf of 20 province lawyer General noted. â€Å"the ready handiness of such information. peculiarly when it may be easy obtained and copied from electronic filings that can be accessed from the cyberspace. greatly increases the concern about the utilizations to which the information might be out. the ability to obtain big sums of information at low cost make the usage of bankruptcy informations for commercial intents economically executable in ways that were non possible when the informations had to be hand-gathered in individual from single clerk’s offices. The effect of each of these developments can be better targeting of fiscal merchandises to single consumers. which can take down monetary values and better service. However. these tendencies besides may increase the hazard of illegal. discriminatory. or invasive usage of extremely sensitive personal information. Included among the concerns raised by the State Attorneys General and privateness advocators are: Identity Theft. More widespread handiness of information such as Social Security Numberss. recognition card Numberss. and other personal identifiers create greater chances for unscrupulous persons commit individuality larceny. Predatory Lending. Greater sharing of information within and among fiscal establishments could take to an addition in the usage of such information unscrupulous loaners. For illustration. sellers engaged in marauding loaning may utilize this information to aim particularly vulnerable debitors. although restricting entree to detailed personal information in bankruptcy filings will non by itself eliminate predatory loaning patterns. it is one measure that can be taken to turn to this jobs Synthesis Chapter ThreeResearch DesignThe descriptive – normative method of researched was used in this survey. The Descriptive attack which aims chiefly at garnering cognition ( i. e. descriptions and accounts ) about the object of survey but does non wish to modify the object. The mark is to happen out how things are. or how they have been. The research worker undertook uttermost attention in the assemblage of informations in order that she could come out with a complete and dependable input in this survey. Normative attack attempts to specify how things should be. which means that it will be necessary to specify besides the subjective point of position that shall be used. This attack has sometimes been called â€Å"applied research. † In carry oning a normative attack. the research worker focused more attending in the aggregation of informations gathered so that all informations will decently classified and categorized harmonizing to their relevancy and part inputs to the anal ysis and reading of informations gathered. Population A ; Sampling Technique The research worker usednonprobability samplingcannot depend upon the principle of chance theory. At least with a probabilistic sample. the research worker knows the odds or chance that could hold represented the population good. The research worker is able to gauge assurance intervals for the statistic. With nonprobability samples. the research worker may or may non stand for the population good. and it will frequently be difficult for her to cognize how good we’ve done so. In general. research workers prefer probabilistic or random trying methods over no probabilistic 1s. and see them to be more accurate and strict. However. in applied societal research there may be fortunes where it is non executable. practical or theoretically reasonable to make random trying. Here. we consider a broad scope of no probabilistic options. Research Instrument The Instrument of measuring in this survey is thru documental analysis of stuffs gathered through books. diaries. unpublished research and surveies. Data Gathering ProceduresThe documental reappraisal and analysis was conducted foremost since it enables the assemblage of preliminary information about the topic of this survey. Interview was besides conducted utilizing the pre-arranged and in agreement day of the months every bit good as locale for interview. Statistical Treatment of Datas Since the survey was descriptive and analytical in nature. the descriptive statistics was used to analyse the informations peculiarly ; frequence distribution and per centum distribution. Frequency Distribution – the sum-up or bite of the frequence of response in a peculiar inquiry point. for one and of the full block of inquiry in another. Percentage Technique – the per centum ratio of a given scope of classs in relation to overall summing up of the constituents of the scope. This technique was used in the demographic profile of the respondents.

Ek Ruka Hua Faisla free essay sample

Power Of Communication Ek Ruka Hua Faisla is a movie about 19 years old boy who was a suspect for murder of his father. There was a committee of 12 people assigned to decide whether boy was culprit or not. This is a movie about different organizational behavior. In this movie we observe the entire decision making process, where each individual had different perception and different behavior in particular situation. Their personal opinion leads them to one wrong decision first but later on with just one leading, convincing, neutral and practical individual, they were able to think on the other side of the case and finally they reached to right conclusion. It was the 12th Juror, who did not agree to this decision. He declared that he did not imply that the accused was innocent. His only argument was that one cannot simply jump to any conclusion without examining all the data and assess the truth. We will write a custom essay sample on Ek Ruka Hua Faisla or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page He justified that a person’s life was at stake and jurors should discuss all the factors associated with the case. He was interrupted by most of the jurors as some of them were in a hurry. Almost everybody had some excuse or other for going home or elsewhere. How the jurors arrived at the final decision after volatile interactions is what the movie is about. In â€Å"Ek Ruka Hua Faisla†, the focus is on the ‘process’ – it is not what happens but how it happens. The main aspect that is highlighted is how our mental models influence our data selection, understanding and actions. Although we assert that our perspectives and decisions should be based on data / information, even the data or information we select and what meanings we give them also depends on how we have grown up and our past experiences. The 12th Juror began the whole process of re-examination of available evidences in the case using the Socratic Method. He kept giving his arguments and tried to re-consider all the facts related to the case and many jurors started taking interest in his arguments. One-by-one he brought up each evidence and through questioning the veracity of the observations, he established that most of the conclusions were based on assumptions and beliefs and thereafter the conclusions themselves were corrected. (â€Å"Socratic Method† provides the appropriate framework to ask the right questions and debate on all available data and their interpretation. The Socratic method is a form of inquiry and debate between individuals with opposing viewpoints based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to illuminate ideas. Below is the different management functions/activities elaborated based on observation: PLANNING: The discussion was planned in the mind of initiator. There was no intention to discuss the case in the committee, but this initiator planned this strategy accordingly and the strategy led to discussion. ORGANIZING: After the strategy of discussion was implemented, the person who was handling and controlling the committee organized the entire discussion. He organized the voting process and discussion. LEADING: We observed that there was one person who was disagree initially with the decision because the proof for the decision making was not satisfactory to him. This dissatisfaction leads him to convince the other team mates to discuss more about this case and he required many logical points to reach to one particular conclusion. CONTROLLING: One more observation about other personality was controlling by nature. This individual was the one who was handling the whole decision making process. Controlling always leads to aggression. So we saw that the person who was controlling and handling the committee was aggressive often. Different Personalities Observed: Active: A person active by nature always have the quality of initiating. In this movie we observe few active personalities, amongst one who was the initiator for the discussion. Other active members supported the initiative taken by that individual. 1) Active-Constructive† Active-Constructive people are those who are active in a constructive way. They are initiatives and ideas have a constructive thought in their mind. Relating this to the movie, we see that after the initiative of one individual was supported by few active-constructive personalities. Mr. K. He initiated the discussion and he had supportive ideas. His arguments were more logical, practical and more based on reasoning. In the entire decision making process he was very patient and calm. In the end he convinced all his committee members who were against, with his practical approach. Mr. Anu Kapoor and Mr. S. M. Zaheer were also active-constructive by nature as they brought many strong points during the discussion. 2) Active-Destructive: Active-destructive are those people who have their original active ideas but supported by destructive behavior. These personalities are bias by nature and at times the personalized approach leads to destructive behavior. In the movie we see Mr. Pankaj Kapoor as an active-destructive personality. He was over emotional and he took the case very personally. He was very active in the decision making process but in a destructive way. Looking to some other Active-Destructive personality Mr. Subiraj was also a perfect example. He was active but he had community bias. Due to this bias behavior verbal conflicts arise amongst committee members and that situation leads the process to aggressive path. Passive: Individuals with passive personalities are those who never take initiatives and are least bothered about the situation around them. 1) Passive-Constructive: Individuals who are passive-constructive by nature do not take any initiative but when a suggestion is asked they have wide and constructive ideas to share. In the movie we find Mr. Subhash Udgate, Mr. Shailendra Goyal, Mr. Amitabh Shrivastav and Mr. Hemant Mishra with this kind of personality. This individuals were not initiative takers but when they were asked to support the case, they had very unique ideas and with that they supported the decision making process in constructive way. Passive-Destructive: Individuals with this personality never take any initiative and even when asked for the suggestions they always have the destructive ideas. Never supportive in any situation. Mr. M. K. Raina is the best suited example for this personality. He was least bother in the decision making of one individual’s life. His personal affairs were more important to him than the life of that boy. He didn’t show any active support in decision making. He was highly influenced by majority. Mr. Azeez Kureshi is also had this kind of personality. Least concerned of the situation and enjoying personal leisure. Conclusion: This movie needs to be viewed from time-to-time to help us reflect and examine how we perceive and deal with our issues and learn to keep the spirit of ‘Inquiry’ always alive within us to question our perceptions and get to the truth. Thus, coming to the conclusion of the movie we saw that a person with active constructive personality is always a good leader and we saw various other personalities and other management fundaments used in this movie.

He reveals himself to be a great adult male of amazing bravery and will when he would non reply? aye or nay to his indictment? ( 135 ) . When Elizabeth Pr octor was stating her hubby, John, about it, she explained, ? great rocks they lay upon his thorax until he plead aye or nay. They say he give them two words. ? More weight? , he says. And died. ? ( 135 ) . Giles Corey? s married woman, Martha, and all of his friends, had already been convicted of witchery, so he had likely decided that he had nil to populate for. Giles meekly protested the nonreversible tribunals by giving himself as an illustration to his friends to remain strong and to non give up in what they believed is incorrect. John Proctor could hold easy used Giles Corey as an illustration, because Proctor learned of Giles? decease before he had to do his determination of squealing or being executed. The following brave individual in The Crucible is Reverend John Hale. Reverend Hale is the church authorization on demonology. He is summoned to Salem to happen out if Reverend Parris? girl Betty, who is enduring from an unexplained unwellness, has been hexed by witchery. He displayed Acts of the Apostless of bravery when he got highly frustrated about how unfair and pathetic Danforth and the tests were, so he stood up and shout, ? I denounce these proceedings, I quit this tribunal! ? ( 120 ) . Reverend Hale so comes back subsequently to assist those convicted by seeking to carry them to squeal and populate, instead than be hanged. By making this, Reverend Hale shows great moral bravery. He gives up everything he has worked for in his demonology calling by traveling against the tribunal, and seeking to persuade guiltless people to squeal because he feels dreadfully responsible for conveying the craze to Salem. Reverend Hale is one of the greatest illustrations of moral bravery because he puts his repute on the line to seek to salvage guiltless peoples? lives. These three great work forces held on to courage during a clip where it would have been easy to take the smooth route out. Alternatively, they did what they knew was right. With all of these illustrations in head, one can come to the point that they had strong and definite bravery. They were willing to do a base for what they thought was incorrect, even if it meant giving up life or repute. These illustrations make today? s people think about, if they could stand up for what they think is unfair or incorrect, and in some cases put their life on the line for it.

The dispute ends with Meursault's murder of the Arab. Meursault, who narrates The Stranger, does not offer an explanation for the murder. It is by all appearances completely without motivation. Nevertheless, society demands a rational explanation. Meursault is arrested and brought to trial. During the trial, it becomes apparent that various members of the courtroom feel a need to explain the senseless, unmotivated killing. It refuses to convict him of the murder without imposing a rational explanation onto the event, which allows for a moral condemnation of the killing. Without a justification for moral condemnation, punishment for the murder lacks a rational basis. Unfortunately, Meursault ends up being tried and sentenced to death more on the basis of his atheism and lack of emotional attachment to his mother than on the basis of anything logically connected to the murder. By the end of the trial, the court construes his lack of emotional attachment to his mother as an explanation of the murder, and vice versa. Together, the two justify the prosecutor's definition of Meursault as a monster. Meursault's predicament develops Camus's philosophy of the absurd--that humans tend to impose a rational order on the world in the face of evidence that the world is absurd. He focuses on the dilemma of acceptance of the absurd without succumbing to despair. Meursault becomes the Absurd Hero when he can accept the absence of a rational basis for his death sentence without succumbing to despair. Hope is merely a distraction from the short time he has left. Meursault develops an optimism without hope, which allows him to make the most of the short life he has left. Fredrick Douglass- Ressurection essays

Fredrick Douglass- Ressurection essays Resurrection by Frederick Douglass was about how he got beat by his hiring master and received no help from his owner. He then gets a root from an older slave named Sandy and then fights Mr. Covey and wins. This was the turning point in his life because he realized that he was a human being and not just a slave. The following passage from Resurrection reveals that Douglass was the type of person who wouldnt give up: After lying there about three quarters of an hour, I nerved myself up again, and started on my way, through bogs and briers, barefooted and bareheaded, tearing my feet sometimes at nearly every step; and after a journey of about seven miles, occupying some five hours to perform it, I arrived at my masters store. I then presented an appearance enough to affect any but a heart of iron. (Douglass 50). He knew in his heart that Mr. Covey wasnt treating him the way that he should have been. So he had to take matters into his own hands, which was going to his owner for protection, but that didnt work out the way he thought. Master Thomas ridiculed the idea that there was any danger for Douglass at Mr. Coveys place. Finally he found help from an older slave by the name of Sandy Jenkins whom he looked to as an advisor. Sandy told Douglass that he must go back to Mr. Covey, but he must also take the root with him and always carry it on his right side, which would prevent Mr. Covey or any other white man from beating him again (51). Upon taking the root from Sandy, Douglass believed that he had reached the end of the road with the point of no return, which would be where he said okay this is about all I can take, Im not going to suffer anymore. This battle with Mr. Covey was the turning point in my career as a slave. It rekindled the few expiring embers of freedom, and revived within me a sense of my own manhood (52). Frederic...

Figuring out what to write about simply takes some self-reflection, brainstorming, and research.Follow these next steps and you will surely find at least one future book topic!#1 Start with your passionsThe best place to start is with what brings you joy. After all, you’re going to enjoy writing your book a lot more if you enjoy the topic.Furthermore, you are more likely to really sell an idea and convince your audience of something if you’re passionate about it.Here are a few questions for finding what to write about:Whats one thing you enjoy most? What do you lose track of time doing?Where do your thoughts go when youre not paying attention? What do people describe you doing often? These things to write about could be as simple as bike riding, home organization, or cooking. It could be something more technical or complex.Take out a pen and paper, and make a list of all the things that you really love. Write them all down, whether they’re big or small. You will draw inspiration from this list, so write down everything that you can think of.#2 Choose to write fact or fictionOnce you have a good, working list of all the things you love, you need to decide something important: will your book be fact or fiction? There are so many different book genres out there that it can feel overwhelming. Hence, it’s best to get an idea of this before you start the writing process.Your passions list will really help you narrow this one down. Perhaps your love of cats could make you want to write a fiction novel about a cat who goes on adventures. Perhaps your love of home gardening could make for a great how-to book to help others who want to grow their own food. Maybe your love of ghosts could make for a good horror book. Whatever it is, your passions are th ere waiting to be turned into a book idea.Your specific genre can be modified as you begin to write. However, deciding whether your book will be fiction or about your real life, like writing a memoir, is something you need to decide before beginning the brainstorming and writing process.#3 What you’re an expert at/inEverybody is an expert in something. Do you believe me? Most people when they hear this go â€Å"oh no, not me!† After all, we are often our own worst critics. However, that’s where everyone is wrong. Each of us is an expert in something. The truth is that you don’t need a million trophies or some fancy title to be an expert. Furthermore, books written by experts don’t always sell. People love getting advice from ordinary people just like you! After all, if you can write and publish a book, so can they. You can find your expertise through a brainstorm.Much like your passion list, make another list! On this one, I want you to write down a ll of your work experience from the last 5-10 (or more!) years. I’m talking everything that you can think of such as employment, volunteer work, hobbies, and unique experiences. After you’ve spent some time on this list, start to look at the patterns: What things keep popping up?What do these things have in common? Are these things related? This list might help you see that you really are more of an expert in something that you can write about. You might not have been the boss of the company, but you might have learned more than you think working in public relations or even answering phones.#4 Pull things to write about from your experiencesYour future book inspiration doesn’t solely come from professional experience. It can come from personal experiences as well. With this, you’ll want to create another list. However, this one will be more of a brainstorm of different life experiences you’ve had.If you can’t just start making a list, start by mapping out your life.Jot down a few of these ideas to write about:Where do you live?Where are you from originally?Who are your family members?Who are your friends?Where have you traveled to?If you answer all of these questions, you will surely start to think of â€Å"that one time I †¦Ã¢â‚¬ or other memories. Write down all the words, thoughts and images that come to mind. Write down how you felt in these moments and how they affected you and youll have plenty of things to write about. When you brainstorm, let your creativity flow! Don’t worry about writing the words in a perfect list. If you feel inspired to draw, draw. These brainstorm sessions are for you and you only, so let them be as crazy as you want!#5 Get writing ideas from friends or family memberThose who know us best often see things about us that we cannot. They have the perspective of seeing our lives from the outside. If you’re thinking of writing a book, speak with someone you’re close to .They simultaneously know you best and want the best for you.Take them out for a cup of coffee and tell them that you want to publish a book. If you already have a few things to want to write about, you could run them by this person. If you don’t, you could simply ask them what they think you should write about. You might get responses like â€Å"I would love to read about your experience with _____† or â€Å"I think you could really tell this story well.†You’ll either narrow down your list of ideas or have a few new ones to add to the list!#6 Turn to the InternetThe Internet is a great place to find inspiration for what to write about. First and foremost, you want to ensure that someone hasn’t already written about what you want to write about. If it’s a broad topic such as â€Å"how to travel the world,† surely at least several people have already beaten you to the punch! However, this isn’t the end of the world. When searching , you can see how these people have written their books and think about how yours would be different. Since no one on earth is exactly like you, you certainly will have your own unique perspective to bring to the table! Only you can be you!In addition to a general Google search, use both Instagram and Pinterest to your advantage. These two social networks will bring your inspiration for what to write about- not to mention give you book marketing opportunities when you do write the book. When searching on Instagram, make sure to look at related hashtags such as this #writerinspiration one.#7 Leave all the brainstorming and discussion for a day or twoAfter you’ve brainstormed and talked with a close friend or family member, put it all down.Simply go about your life as normal going to work or school or whatever your normal routine is. You are sure to come up with more ideas or more details to add to your existing notes at the most random times. When something comes to mind, reco rd it right away!It might be good to have a notebook with you at all times or start a note on your phone. You can actually use an app like Evernote for this very purpose. After a few days of a break, come back to all your notes and decide on what you want to write about.#8 Create a list to work fromA lot of authors feel like pressure when picking their book topic. It is kind of scary to pick an idea and then write several hundred pages on it.However, remind yourself that choosing an idea to write about does not obligate you to write an entire book about it. You might start by writing the outline or the first few chapters and realize that you’d rather write about a different topic. That’s okay!Creating a large list of ideas will help you when youre just not feeling one idea anymore- whether youre writing a book or simply a blog post.Get out that notebook and get to work! The best time to get started brainstorming your perfect idea is now! Don’t wait around and let fear get the better of you.Get out your notebook and start making these lists. Write down every word, thought or image that comes to your mind! Are you ready to move forward with your idea?Weve got your next steps! If you want to take your book from idea to full outline to published book (in as little as 90 days), we have the process for you right here

Geography of Beauty

Geography of Beauty It is a common English idiom to say that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but perhaps it is more accurate to say that beauty is in the geography, as cultural ideals of beauty vary drastically by region. Interestingly, the local environment seems to play an important role in what is seen as beautiful. Large Beauties Extreme forms of this practice include sending young girls to fattening farms, called gavages, alluding to their unfortunate similarity to French farms where geese are forcibly fed via sausage stuffers to create foie gras. Today, food is considerably less scarce, leading to many morbidly obese women in Mauritania. As Western media continues to infiltrate Mauritanian society, cultural preferences for large women are dying out in exchange for a slimmer Western ideal. Although Mauritania is an extreme example, this idea that large women are beautiful women are seen in other regions of the world where food is scarce, and populations are susceptible to famine, such as Nigeria and rainforest cultures. Flawless Skin Perhaps the most shocking facet of East Asian beauty is the fact that the male cosmetic industry is booming. In a society where flawless skin is considered an indicator of social success, South Korean males spend more on skin and makeup products that any other male population in the world. According to the Associated Press, this years male South Korean beauty industry is expected to gross over US $850 million. The trend for more feminine and pretty males in South Korea seems to be the result of an influx of Japanese cultural goods that portray male figures as romantic and effeminate. Skin Lightening With the southern portion of India residing in the Tropic of Cancer, Indias close proximity to the equator has resulted in the characteristically dark skin tone of its citizens. Indias infamous caste system, although based on birth and occupation, placed that vast majority of those with extremely dark skin into the lowest caste, classifying them as undesirables or untouchables. Although today the caste system is outlawed and it is prohibited to discriminate against someone based on his or her caste, the widespread beauty ideal of light skin is a subtle reminder of darker days. To feed this cultures obsession with light skin tones, a huge industry dedicated to lightening and skin bleaching creams flourishes in India. Light of My Eyes These coverings leave the eyes at the focus of the females face, or in more extreme communities; only the eyes are left uncovered. These cultural and religious norms have led many predominantly Islamic countries to focus on eyes as the epitome of beauty. This fixation of eyes is an integral part of Arabic culture. Many idioms of the Arabic language center on the eyes, for example, the Arabic equivalent of responding My pleasure when asked to do a favor roughly translates to By the light of your eyes I will do it. As Islam spread throughout the Middle East and into South Asia and Africa, it brought with it modesty practices for women such as the hijab and burka. With these new cultural norms, eyes likewise became the focal point of beauty in many of these cultures. In addition, khol is an ancient eye cosmetic used not only in the Middle East but also in Africa and South Asia. It is said that it was worn around the eye to protect from vision damage from the suns harsh rays, as these areas where khol is used regularly are very near to the equator and thus receive a lot of direct energy from the sun. Eventually, khol became used as an ancient form of eyeliner and mascara to line and accentuate the eyes. It is still used in many places today. What is beautiful is often not exactly a universal concept. What is seen as beautiful and attractive in one culture is seen as unhealthy and undesirable in another. Like so many other topics, the question of what is beautiful is intricately intertwined with geography.

US Population Growth and its demands on the enviroment, economy and Research Paper

US Population Growth and its demands on the enviroment, economy and national healthcare - Research Paper Example Background The population growth of the United States is ever increasing by about 3 million people per year (Hinde, 1998). Indeed, the overpopulation issue does not exist in the vacuum. The main reason for overpopulation is not because people do not know the main ideas on birth control processes; however, it is due to the immigration of people from other foreign countries (Alejandro & Rumbaut, 1990). In fact, almost 50 percent of the United States population is due to immigration. Worldwide, the main reaction to carrying capacity setbacks would be to migrate to regions where the carrying capacity does not seem to be pushed beyond the maximum level, or it is perceived to provide opportunities. In most cases, much of the United States’ immigration is fueled by this conception, but the immigrants tend to forget that the United States does not possess endless resources. Such wrong perceptions of immigrants do not only cause injustices to the carrying capacity of the many states in the country, but also many other overpopulation components, including environmental damage, social disruption, and even unemployment (Regoeczi, 2002). Demands on the environment Perhaps, the main devastating demands of overpopulation could be seen in the United States’ environs. ... le that the Americans keep on producing a lot of air pollutants that perhaps one day could become hazardous and even get to other regions in the world. Apart from pollution, there exist reasons for concerns regarding the farmland, wildlife, and forestry. It is because of overpopulation that United States has lost a lot of its wetlands, old-growth forests, and on a routine basis go on loosing many miles of land to developments. While a lot of factors such as forests, pollutants, energy, etc. could be those chosen to demonstrate the limitations of overpopulation on the carrying, reflection of striking example is water. Indeed, many areas within the United States, be it the central, west, and even southwest states, mostly those experiencing the rapid growth in population are inflicted either with shortages of water or contaminated water due to pollution. The demand on resources that lead to damages of forestry has caused many states in the United States face limited rainfall. Other natu rally occurring water sources have also been limited resulting in serious depletion and even pollution of the ground water. Clean water is essential to the people of the United States. Carrying capacity of such limited water areas that extend many states is really a threat to the human life. It is notable that, the outcomes of overpopulation demands on the environment are negative. Resources get depleted that the environment becomes disregarded to a certain point that, many regions in the United States lose most of their capacity to support a dense population. Whenever the carrying capacity becomes exceeded, the damage to the environment is normally very severe that the carrying capacity of population for upcoming generations is highly reduced. The chains of the events regarding

Marine industry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Marine industry - Essay Example Credible statistics and claims were uttered in line with this phenomenon. Perhaps, one might say such things are inevitable, we cannot deny the fact that these things could happen without the leniency and negligence of people working with regards to their duties plus the fact that these things could be avoided. Dr. Anita Rothblum of the United States Coast Guard research and development center stressed that over 40 years, the shipping industry focused on improving ship structures and reliability of ship systems to reduce casualty and ensure proficiency and reliability. However, the casualty is still high. She further pointed out that " Maritime system is a people system" and people do play a big part with regards to these errors. Moreover, she explains that 75-96% percent are caused by human errors and tanker accidents, collision, fires and explosions cause some of these incidents. This claim is not new to marine authorities 1. At present, if we are to base on the biggest of perhaps one of the most tragic disasters of ship industries in the world, the tragedy of MV Doa Paz in the Philippines is perhaps the perfect example of human error to date.
